Cleaning is the largest single category of expatriate employment at Saudi airports and the most accessible to candidates with limited education or language. It is also the category most heavily targeted by fraudulent recruiters, precisely because the applicant pool is large and the barrier to interest is low.

This guide covers what airport cleaning work actually involves in the kingdom, who employs, what it pays, and what a legitimate offer looks like.
Four different cleaning jobs
The word covers work with very different rhythms, and knowing which you are being offered matters.
Terminal cleaning covers departure and arrival halls, corridors, seating areas, escalators and glazing. Continuous work during operating hours, performed around passengers, plus periodic deep cleaning overnight.
Washroom attendance is a dedicated function at busy airports, with restrooms checked and serviced on a short cycle throughout the day. It is the single largest determinant of passenger cleanliness perception, and at pilgrimage gateways the volumes are extraordinary.
Aircraft interior cleaning happens between flights, to the clock. Crews board on arrival and have the turnaround window to clear waste, wipe surfaces, restock seat pockets, service lavatories and reset the cabin. This is the most time-pressured cleaning role at any airport.
Back-of-house and airside cleaning covers offices, staff areas, baggage halls and ramp areas, generally outside passenger view and often on night shifts.
Who the employer really is
Almost no airport cleaner is employed by the airport. Terminal cleaning is contracted to facilities management companies, and aircraft cleaning is usually performed by ground handling companies or their subcontractors.
This matters for two reasons. First, applications go to those contractors, not to the airport authority. Second, when a contract changes hands — which happens on renewal cycles — staff are often transferred to the incoming contractor. Ask who your legal employer is and what happens at contract renewal; a serious recruiter can answer both.
What the work is like
Expect method rather than improvisation. Employers train to a defined procedure per area type, with specified chemicals and equipment, and colour-coded cloths and tools separating washroom, food area and general cleaning to prevent cross-contamination. Mixing them is treated as a serious error.
Airport cleaning has two features that distinguish it from most cleaning work. The first is that you work in front of an audience: passengers are present, and staff are expected to work around them unobtrusively and to respond politely when asked for directions. The second is security: cleaning staff hold airside access passes, and that means background checks before issue, wearing the pass visibly at all times, and a strict obligation to report anything unattended or unusual rather than handling it yourself.
Aircraft cleaning adds its own discipline — a fixed sequence completed within the turnaround, and specific rules about what may be touched in the flight deck and galley areas.
Physical reality and shift pattern
This is standing, walking, bending work across a long shift, with distances covered in a large terminal running to many kilometres a day. Deep cleaning at night involves machinery — scrubbers, polishers, extraction equipment — and training in their use is part of the job.
Airports never close, so rosters cover nights, weekends and holidays. Night shifts typically carry allowances. At Jeddah and Madinah the pilgrimage seasons produce sustained peaks that stretch cleaning teams harder than any other period of the year.
Airside and outdoor cleaning falls under the kingdom’s midday outdoor work restrictions during the hottest months; indoor terminal work continues year-round in air conditioning, which makes it one of the more climate-tolerable options available to workers at this level.
Pay and package
Cleaning is at the bottom of the airport pay scale, and it is important to hear that plainly before travelling. Expatriate cleaning staff in Saudi Arabia commonly earn in the region of SAR 1,000 to SAR 2,000 a month as basic salary, with night and overtime allowances on top.
Where the arrangement becomes workable is the package around it. Employers in this sector very commonly provide shared accommodation, transport between accommodation and the airport, medical insurance and an annual return ticket. With food managed carefully, that structure is what allows workers to remit money home from a modest basic wage.
Because the basic is low, every deduction matters. Ask precisely what is deducted for accommodation and utilities, whether transport is genuinely free, and how overtime is calculated. Get it in the contract. Advertisements quoting several times these figures for cleaning work are not describing this market.
Verifying an offer in this category
Fraud concentrates here, so apply the checks rigorously. No legitimate employer or licensed agent charges a worker for a job, a visa or a “seat”. Legitimate costs — passport, medical examination at an approved centre, document attestation, and a regulated agent service fee where your country permits one — are paid to institutions against receipts.
For applicants from India, the recruiting agent must be registered on the eMigrate system, and that registration is publicly checkable. An agent who is not on the register cannot lawfully recruit you regardless of how established the office appears.
Ask for the employer’s name, and search it independently. Ask whether the contract will be registered through the kingdom’s official contract system and whether wages are paid through the official wage system — a genuine employer answers yes without hesitation.
Rights worth knowing before you go
Your passport is your property; confiscation by an employer is not a normal condition of employment. Wages should reach you through the official payment system, creating a record that makes any later complaint possible. Saudi labour reforms have made transfer between employers possible subject to conditions, rather than dependent wholly on employer consent as under earlier arrangements.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development operates labour complaint channels, and your country’s embassy in Riyadh or consulate in Jeddah can assist nationals in difficulty. Knowing these exist before you need them is the point.
Progression
The ladder is real if unglamorous: cleaner to team leader to shift supervisor to facilities coordinator, with promotion driven by attendance and standards discipline rather than language. Machine operation and specialist cleaning — cold chain areas, aircraft interiors, high-level glazing — pay above general terminal work and are worth volunteering for.
Several years of documented facilities work with a recognised contractor is also a credential across the wider Gulf market, where large facilities management firms operate in every country.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to read or write English?
Basic spoken English helps with instructions and safety briefings, and a small vocabulary of chemical and equipment names is usually enough. Chemical labelling training is provided by the employer.
Can women apply?
Yes, and female cleaning teams are employed at Saudi airports, particularly for female washroom facilities. Accommodation is arranged separately; confirm the arrangements in writing before accepting.
Is aircraft cleaning better paid than terminal cleaning?
Often slightly, because it is time-pressured and requires airside training, but the difference at entry level is modest. The bigger difference is the pace of work.
Will I get an airport security pass?
Airside roles require one, which means a background check before issue. A clean record is therefore a genuine requirement for those positions.
Are the advertised SAR 4,500 cleaning salaries real?
Not as a basic wage for entry-level cleaning work in this market. Treat such figures as a reason to examine the offer closely and insist on the written contract before committing to anything.
